Passport Check and Send
Summary: The Passport Check and Send service is offered by the Post Office for a fee of £9,75. A third of all passport applications are returned due to mistakes, using the Check and Send service will limit errors on your application.
The Check and Send facility offered by the Post Office is recommended by the the Passport Office as applications sent using this process are less likely to include any of the basic errors which delay the issuing of the standard passport.
This service usually makes the application process for your passport a lot quicker as all documentation will have already been checked by the Post Office themselves and marked as being done so when it arrives at the the Passport Office. This means you could possibly receive your new passport as soon as two weeks after the day of delivery, however if you are applying for a UK passport for the first time, you will still be required to attend a passport interview which will extend the time it takes for your application to be processed.
Under the Check and Send service, the applicant completes all documentation personally, either online or in paper form, and takes it along with all supporting documentation, to their local accredited Post Office.
If you have used the online facility to complete your application, then you do need to wait until your completed forms have been printed and sent to you before you can take advantage of this service.
For a small fee, currently £9.75 for each applicant born after 1st September 1929, a member of staff from the Post Office will check the form has been completed correctly and that all supporting documentation is included. After taking payment, the completed is then forwarded directly by Special Delivery to the the Passport Office for processing as soon as possible.
You should always bear in mind that the ‘Check and Send’ times are not guaranteed as in some cases the Passport Office will take extra time to making the necessary background checks.
Remember if you are applying for your first adult passport, you should always allow up to six weeks to get your passport.
What if the Post Office makes a mistake
If the Post Office makes a mistake you can ask for a refund of their handling charge. In the small print it states that “Neither the Passport Office nor the Post Office will be responsible for any indirect or resulting loss you may have suffered. This includes (but is not limited to) any loss of opportunity, profit, income or reputation.”
In plain English you can not claim for anything that happens to you as a result of your passport being delayed, for example, missing out on holidays, flights, business meetings, etc.
