First Passport Application
Summary: The process for a 1st time passport British passport has changed to now include an interview for all applicants. Unfortunately there is no fast track application service for 1st time passports.
If you have never held a UK passport, either as an adult or child, and you are a British citizen; a British overseas territories citizen; a British subject; a British overseas
national; or a British protected person then you are eligible to apply for your first standard adult passport in the UK.
An administration fee, currently £85, is applicable to your application and you should allow up to six weeks before expecting your passport to be delivered.
Complete the standard passport form available online or from the Post Office, the Passport Office website or via the the Passport Office helpline. Complete the form honestly and fully and include all supporting documentation before sending it to the the Passport Office either via post or using the Post Office Check and Send Service recommended by the the Passport Office.
No fast track for 1st time passport application
Fast Track and Premium application services are unavailable to first time applicants as the process is considerably longer than the timescales allowed.
Once your application has been checked, you will be invited to make an appointment for your passport interview at your local the Passport Office offices.
These interviews have been introduced to provide extra security against those trying to obtain passports with false identities and are a friendly procedure which will be used to authenticate your identity.
The interview will take approximately 30 minutes and will include questions of a personal nature on subjects that someone who is trying to falsely use your identity should not know.
Once you have successfully completed your interview, your passport application will be processed and your new documents sent to you by Special Delivery.
