How much does it cost to apply for a passport - using application form the Post Office?
Adult passport application fee - £85,00
Children passport application fee - £58,50
Born on or before 2nd September 1929 - Free
Fast Track Service, One week - £103,00
Premium service, One day - £128,00   
Additional fees that may be payable
Post Office Check and send service: For a fee of £9,75 your passport will be checked by the Post Office staff. The staff will check the following;
Make sure all the right sections of the application form have be filled out correctly
Make sure all the supporting documents are correct (including photos)
Take payment for passport fee and check and send fee.
The Past Office Check and Send service usually makes the passport application process a lot quicker as all documentation will be checked by the Post Office. This means you could possibly receive your new passport as soon as two weeks after the date of submission.
Expediting Fee with Private Passport Expediter: If you do not have the time to visit the Passport Office for a fast track passport application, you can hire a private expediting company to submit the application on your behalf. The fees payable to passport expediters range from £150 to £300, this is in addition to the passport fee.
Where Should I Apply for My Passport?
The method you use to apply for a UK passport will depend on how fast you need your passport. The most common method of application is via mail. The Post Office Check and Send service is also very popular because it minimises potential errors on application form.
For urgent travel you will need to use passport fast track services. You will need to call the Passport Office on 0300 222 0000 to book an appointment.
What is the breakdown of the passport fee

There are three components to passport application fees:
 costs incurred in administering passport applications;
costs of providing consular assistance to British citizens overseas; and
 costs of providing assistance to British citizens overseas in the event of unexpected emergencies

The current adult passport fee increased £72.50 to £85.00 below is a breakdown of the elements that make up the adult passport fee:

Do you need your passport urgently?
The Passport Office offers a Fast Track one-week service and a Premium one-day service. You must make an appointment for these services by calling the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000. The line is open 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday and 9.00 am to 5.30 pm on weekends and public holidays. Read more.
