How long it takes to get a passport

Passport fees vary depending on the type of application and the service you use. You have three options when applying for a passport and categories depending on urgency;

1. Normal service by post usually takes three weeks however note that this is not guaranteed;

2. One-week Fast Track service this is by appointment only.

3. One-day Premium service - again this is by appointment only.

Fast Track Passports
IPS offers a Fast Track one-week service and a Premium one-day service. You must make an appointment for these services by calling the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000. The line is open 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday and 9.00 am to 5.30 pm on weekends and public holidays. Read more.

Renewing your Passport
You don't have to wait for your passport to expire before applying. You can carry up to nine months unused time from your old passport on to your new one. Read more.

Applying for a Child Passport
Children can no longer be added to a parent's passport but need one of their own to travel abroad. Apply early for babies' and children's passports. Check which passport is right for your child, how to apply and when you should do so. Find out more about applying for a child passport

Post Office Check & Send service
This service usually makes the application process for your passport a lot quicker as all documentation will have already been checked by the Post Office themselves and marked as being done so when it arrives at the IPS. This means you could possibly receive your new passport as soon as two weeks after the day of delivery. Read more.
