Breakdown of Passport Costs
There are three components to passport application fees:
• costs incurred in administering passport applications;
• costs of providing consular assistance to British citizens overseas; and
• costs of providing assistance to British citizens overseas in the event of unexpected emergencies
The current adult passport fee dropped from £77.50 to £72.50, below is a breakdown of the elements that make up the adult passport fee:
Passport Processing : £26.60
Consular Premium : £15.62
Production of Passport : £10.79
Delivery : £3.30
Overheads : £16.19
Total : £72.50
How long it takes to get a passport
Passport fees vary depending on the type of application and the service you use. You have three options when applying for a passport and categories depending on urgency;
1. Normal service by post usually takes three weeks however note that this is not guaranteed;
2. One-week Fast Track service this is by appointment only.
3. One-day Premium service - again this is by appointment only.
Fast Track Passports
IPS offers a Fast Track one-week service and a Premium one-day service. You must make an appointment for these services by calling the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000. The line is open 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday and 9.00 am to 5.30 pm on weekends and public holidays. Read more.
Renewing your Passport

Post Office Check & Send service
This service usually makes the application process for your passport a lot quicker as all documentation will have already been checked by the Post Office themselves and marked as being done so when it arrives at the IPS. This means you could possibly receive your new passport as soon as two weeks after the day of delivery. Read more.
